Zechariah 13 and 14 are some of the most intense chapters many of us will ever read, and that’s exactly why we wanted to slow down and talk them through. Apocalyptic literature can feel like a riddle, but we’re convinced God gives these visions to reveal truth that steadies the church, not to stir panic. We connect the imagery to Jesus’ words in Matthew 24–25 and key scenes in Revelation, then keep bringing the conversation back to a simple anchor: God is sovereign, and His plan is not haphazard.
We also tackle a major sticking point for end times teaching: tribulation views and the timing of the rapture. We explain the basic differences between pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, and post-tribulation perspectives and why people who love Scripture can still disagree. Even if you believe the church won’t be present for the tribulation, Zechariah still lands with real force because it reveals God’s character, God’s judgment, and God’s grace. The same mercy God promises to pour out is the mercy that saves us through Jesus Christ.
From there, we talk about Israel and why it’s so easy to get pulled into two extremes in today’s media climate. We push back on both uncritical cheerleading and ugly blame, because Scripture names sin as the true problem. We also discuss false prophets in Zechariah’s warning and what that means in an age of YouTube experts and nonstop commentary. The practical takeaway is personal: don’t compartmentalize your faith. God calls us to consecration, to real holiness, and to rooting out idols before they grow.

Welcome And Why Zechariah Is Challenging
SPEAKER_00Well, hey, Lifehouse family, welcome back to our Monday time with Pastor Mark. Always excited each week to be bringing you just a deeper look. And I think this week, especially, you know, two chapters, end of Zechariah, whole lot to unpack. I know it was probably a challenge and 30 minutes putting it together. So some overtime today. Hopefully we can kind of dig into a few things. And I definitely felt I was ready for my Sunday afternoon nap yesterday.
Apocalyptic Scripture Reveals Hope
SPEAKER_01For sure. I could tell. So even just, you know, we the nature of so this is apocalyptic, you know, the genre is apocalyptic. And so define that for our So it's just speaking of, you know, the apocalypse or the the end times, and the the writer, the author is describing things, uh what he sees, what's revealed in ways, you know, he's describing things that they've never seen before, like it hasn't happened yet to people that have not seen these things before. So these are unprecedented visions and ideas and thoughts. And so it's just really, it is very challenging to make sense of it all. At the same time, it's revelation. And so it's not meant to be thought of as a riddle, like we got to figure this out, like it's a riddle and it's a puzzle. And really, it's meant to reveal in a way that is impactful, encouraging, you know, inspiring. And so it's not meant to scare, right? As the book of Revelation, I always said this when preaching through that, in the same way Zechariah, it's meant to prepare, right? To equip, you know, knowledge is power in essence, and it really is helpful knowing that, you know, Jesus even spoke of these end times in a way that was, you know, to read them, it's kind of overwhelming to think about what's being said. He says in Matthew 24 and 25 that there will be a tribulation such as never has been experienced, nor will there ever be. Like it's going to be intense. But again, kind of knowing that this is a part of God's plan. It's not arbitrary or haphazard or coincidental. When it actually goes down, like we can remember God is sovereign, he's in control of all these things. And as his people who belong to him, like that should give us peace and encouragement or comfort, at least to some degree. Right. So, but yeah, apocalyptic. I mean, yeah, there's a lot, a lot of imagery, you know, a lot of things. Like, what is this talking about? So, yeah, navigating through two chapters of that yesterday, Zechariah chapter 13 and 14 was challenging. We finished the book of Zechariah. You know, we've been navigating verse by verse through this. It was a big bite, you know, to kind of deal with those last two concluding chapters. But I hope, at least to some degree, you know, we trust that when God's word is sent forth, it doesn't return void and that it was impactful, you know, to someone in some way.
SPEAKER_00And I think just laying out the more we study the Bible, the different types, you know, there's narrative, which is like just telling what things happened, you know, doesn't mean they condoned it, but narrative, then we have like poetry in the Psalms, you know, then we have prophetic, which prophetic, you know, pointing to Christ, and then you know, apocalyptic is, you know, that future time. So like Revelation, like you say, Jesus talked about these things, Paul talked about these things, Zechariah is talking about these things. So I think you know, it could be confusing if we haven't come to fully understand those things, but hopefully that's kind of a helpful. And it's a beautiful that's the thing.
SPEAKER_01The Bible, like yeah, contains all these things together in a beautiful way. And none of these, you know, different authors, different perspectives, you know, but then different genres of literature. It's all truth, though, you know, and so it's really kind of a, I don't know, it just makes things more exciting. You know, it's not just the same, you know, same old, same old. I will say that I'll be entering into narrative, so the book of Acts, you know, and so I'm excited about that. I would say, you know, I I don't know. I don't want to say that I'm it's easier. You know, I mean, all of God's word, we tremble at his word from Genesis to Revelation, and it's weighty. I, you know, it's truth. But yeah, I think it's a little bit easier, you know, less challenging or confusing, I think, for people in our context to understand. And so I'm looking forward to transitioning from Zechariah to the book of Acts.
SPEAKER_00But still a lot here. Like I say, I think the important part with apocalyptic probably is some of it's like we're still looking into the future. You know, this really, like you say, ties reading in light and in tandem with Revelation and so much of what we see in the New Testament that actually kind of gives us more when we read those together in this book. Absolutely.
Tribulation Views And The Rapture
SPEAKER_01And so it's l let's talk a little bit about. So there's so many different views. A lot of the things aren't because of the nature of the literature apocalyptic. It's not black and white. Right. You know, it's not prescriptive in the sense where, like, thou shalt do this, this, this, and thou shalt not do this, this, and this. That's prescriptive. Or it it it in essence is descriptive and describing the things that will happen, what will happen. And then, you know, we're left to ask the spirit, you know, how do we respond and apply, you know, these truths to us. But yeah, end times views. And so it can get very confusing. I tried to explain a little bit about the the tribulation views. So Jesus speaks of this tribulation, I believe. Zechariah. Well, really, yeah, but a lot of it, but especially very specifically. So Revelation 16 talks about about the battle of Armageddon, Revelation 19 talks about when Jesus Christ comes, behold, you know, riding on a white horse to judge and make war, you know, all these different things. But the tribulation is that Matthew 24, 25 time when Jesus says we'll be, you know, in the end on that day, the day of the Lord will be a time of great tribulation. So what so there's views of what's called pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, and post-tribulation, where it believes that the church, we believe, I believe in pre-trib, that the church will be raptured prior to this tribulation taking place. Some people believe that it will take place in the middle of the tribulation, that the church will be raptured, and then others post after the tribulation is over. And so, with a pre-tribulation view, essentially, that means that the church will not be here when this tribulation happens. What's described in Zechariah 13 and 14 will take place after the church that we are a part of will be raptured. So we're not going to be here. However, even in light of that view, there's still things, takeaways, application, relevant truth for us to apply to our lives to be encouraged by and comforted by, because this still is dealing with, you know, the nature, the character, the plan, the purposes of the God that we serve. The grace, you know, that will be bestowed upon a people is the same grace that we have been saved by, the same mercy, that the fountain that will be opened, I believe, that this describes in the last days to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the nation of Israel, has been opened to us. And so, man, to think about that fountain is such an encouraging thing, you know, to do. So there's relevant application, and and even though the church, we're not going to be here, according to my view.
SPEAKER_00Right. So and I know we talked about, touched on it before we get into the points. We we briefly talked about it last week, you know, the nation of Israel. That's who Zechariah is addressing here, pointing to a future time. And so I think there's still clearly plans and purposes, much controversy around that, similar to the millennium and the tribulation and how we view Israel. How should we think rightly about what we see going on in the world today? You know, the nation.
Israel Grace And Avoiding Extremes
SPEAKER_01And again, I know we touched on it last week, but maybe just I think we should think about it and try to be aware of what's going on. I mean, it's very challenging because some, you know, where we're getting information from, like different news sources and the different agendas and spins on these different things, it's hard to know what to believe and who to believe and how to make sense of all the reports that we're getting. I mean, these things are happening on the other side of the world. But we need to take note. I mean, even the fact that the nation of Israel still exists today, despite the history. I mean, we think about the Holocaust and you know, the persecution that they have endured, and yet the fact that they still exist is a very telling sign that there's something unique about this nation. And so, yeah, I think at the very least we should take note, you know, and just consider that. I do believe that God has a plan, and I believe scripture reveals that. Zechariah, the book of Revelation, Romans chapters 9, 10, 11, that that there's something that God will do. It's not because essentially they're better than other people. I mean, I think scripture makes it clear that God chose them and really in spite of them. And the salvation that that I believe Zechariah speaks of and promises to this nation, it's not because they deserve that salvation. I think that's made very clear. And they're an unfaithful essentially, I mean, salvation is through Jesus Christ, has been, will be, and so they must place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ to receive the same salvation. And so it's not going to be this just, you know, oh, you know, you're saved now despite your unfaithfulness and despite, you know, your wicked ways and evil ways in the same way it is for us. But it's glorious in the sense where these people will repent and receive what they don't deserve, God's grace and salvation, and God will show them mercy and not give them what they do deserve, which is hell, you know, and condemnation.
SPEAKER_00Trevor Burrus, Jr.: And there are many messianic Jews, you know. A lot of the Jewish people have studied the scriptures, you know, and see that yes, this all points to Christ. And so many do live that way, some choose not to, and like you said, it's really not different, you know, from one to the other. But they are blessed in that Christ came through. God used their nation in amazing ways, and still, like you said, existing. So there's something to that.
SPEAKER_01Trevor Burrus, Jr.: I will say that I had a challenging conversation after one of the service yesterday from a man who comes from a Jewish background and yet is a believer, now has placed his faith and trust in Christ, and he really struggled with the sermon yesterday and felt as though I was really coming hard against and speaking, disparaging, in essence, the Jewish nation. That was not my intent. You know, my intent was to elevate the grace of God, not necessarily highlight or expound and say, oh, the Jewish nation is wicked and you know. No, all men fall short of the glory of God. Jews, Gentiles. The wages of sin is death for Jews and Gentiles, you know, for all of us, for the world. But God's grace is so glorious. And so my heart was not necessarily to say, oh, these people are wicked and undeserving. We all are, but really to say God's grace will be bestowed upon them. He will pour out a spirit of grace upon them according to the scripture in a way that is glorious. And that is something that we should, regardless of what we think about what they're doing as a nation, rejoice in, you know, because I don't know. I to me, I felt I don't know if that makes sense, but like I think he was struggling to understand where I was coming from. But my heart, again, was to more magnify God and his grace rather than magnify the sin or wickedness of any particular people.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Ross Powell I think it's important. I think there's really two extreme positions out there. One that Israel can do no wrong, which we should not hold to that, because sinful people like we've been talking about, and we should call out corruption anywhere we see it, in any nation. Israel, Germany, France, United States. Trevor Burrus, Jr.: Right. I think we are United States. Sometimes we try to justify everything we should not, as Christians, we should look rightly. And then the other side that not only that, they are the evil in the world, and they are the some people anti-Semitic that we see in our society of they're the root of all corruption. And I may have mentioned in last week's video. When we make it a who rather than a what is wrong with the world, we're we're in a bad place. So we shouldn't say the Jews are the problem. Sin is the problem. Like you say, we all are sinful, but God is working out his plans. We just have to read the Bible and see that he's been doing that. So hopefully it kind of helps people think about these things. Don't fall for if you're on social media, YouTube, you'll find one extreme or the other. You'll find like, don't oppose their serial ever, you gotta support everything they do, or you'll find they're evil, they're terrible. Like the right places to be biblical about these things.
False Prophets And Where We Learn
SPEAKER_01Right. And I think that that's, you know, even speaking to one of the things I think that's addressed in Zechariah chapter 13 when it speaks of prophets and how, like, again, everybody presents themselves as an expert these days. They have YouTube channels, social media, news channels, you know, and they have titles and all these different things, you know, and and so Christians even are getting all their information from these people who aren't even claiming to be Christians, right? Who some of them are, you know, non-Christians, and yet they're saying, like, this is how you should think, and this is how you should respond, and this is what you should do in light of what's happening in and among these people. And I'm not saying that all that information is false, but again, yeah, we're like we are Christians. We follow Jesus, we seek, you know, truth from his word. The spirit within us gives us wisdom, you know, and helps us apply the truth that we know. And so I think that we just need to like really consider where we're getting our information from, you know, and and who are we following at the end of the day, you know, and I think that we should be cautious about who that is and who we're putting stock and what stock information we're putting in. And so, because it has been extremely divisive, these views and a divided house cannot stand. Jesus said it himself. And so I'm not saying we shouldn't have these conversations and consider what other people are saying, but I think that ultimately we need to remember like who we are fully submitted to, regardless of how we feel about what he says or what it seems, you know, we're submitted to his truth and his word and to be obedient to him and to honor him and to be a part of his plans. I don't want to come against his plan or to try to thwart something that's a futile effort at the end of the day, anyway. But yeah, like in the last day, all these false prophets are gonna be humbled, you know, and Jesus is gonna be exalted.
SPEAKER_00So careful if you say you speak for God, you know, like you said, it comes right out. You know, these prophets are gonna be confronted. You know, if you've spread false false things and lie, you know, lies, it's it's not good. So we have to be very humble and and what we can know, tying all the way back to apocalyptic literature, you know, the nation of Israel, like we do need to be very humble as to what we can know and what we can't know.
Consecration Idols And Purifying Fire
SPEAKER_01Aaron Ross Powell Well, not only do we put up with like all these experts, we give ear to them. And what this is saying in the last day is like no one's gonna put up with any of that anymore. Like, because of God and his cleansing that will take place in and among the nation of Israel, like all those, you know, false prophets or prophets who were, you know, wearing hairy cloaks and presenting themselves as experts, like they're gonna be done away with in such a way, even their parents, like if hypothetically there's a prophet, like their parents are gonna put them to death according to old testament law, because they're just like, we're not having any more, like any more of that. Like everyone will look to the Lord and to truth and to be obedient to the truth in the last days. So what's relevant application for us? Like, yeah, let's do that now. Like, why wait? Why put off to tomorrow what we can do today? Like, let's honor the Lord and not just, you know, put up with, let's let's not give ear at all to slanderous, malicious, false prophets who speak against and contradict what God says in his word. Yeah, and let's be about cleansing, right? So when Jesus Christ comes, like he's gonna cleanse, purify. And again, the church, we're told throughout the New Testament, we're to be holy, for he is holy, not okay with sin. Like, let's not put up with sin. What's painted, uh, this picture is a complete consecration of everything, down to the little bells on horses. Now, we don't use horses in the way that they do, but that was a part of their society. What's promised here is that even the bells on horses will be inscribed with holy to the Lord. What that's saying is, even down to the minutest detail, everything will be set apart for him. You know, I think in our culture, relevant application today, we are so about compartmentalizing things, even our faith. And we say, well, you know, my faith is something I do on Sundays, you know, Monday through Saturday, I go to work and I play sports and I do all these other things, but you know, I'm setting apart Sunday. No, we we it's to set apart everything, all of ourselves, whether we work in secular environments vocationally, or go to public schools, you know, like we're to be set apart. We belong to the Lord from head to toe. Everything we are, every aspect of our lives, and that's a joy, like that might be an intimidating thing. Now that that costs too much. No, he paid it all. He paid for all of us with his blood. And so we should be consecrated unto him in the way that's described here, down to the minutest detail.
SPEAKER_00There's a prayer I was reading this morning. It says, Lord, make me as holy as a saved sinner can be. You know, like we know we can only do so much until this apocalyptic day comes, but that should be our heart to God cleanse me, concentrate, consecrate me, you know, looking forward to that coming when that will be perfected. Right. We shouldn't give in in the meantime.
SPEAKER_01On this side of eternity, we're never gonna actually literally be holy. Jesus is the one who never sinned, and he is the one who we aspire to follow and to to emulate and to to to to follow. But uh so we're not necessarily looking for seeking perfection, holiness literally, but what we're seeking, and what I think encouraging through this text is sincerity and authenticity, a desire to be holy, you know, a desire to do away with sin and sinfulness. God sees our hearts, and that's what I think blesses him. The imputed righteousness of Christ is ours, like through Christ. He he we are considered righteous, not actually righteous, but considered righteous because of Jesus. But we should actually aspire to live righteously in holiness and in purity and before the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. So yeah, just I mean, we could kind of briefly, you know, cleansing will happen, right? Idolatry, you know, something we should be constantly on the lookout for in our lives as they come up. I think, you know, a good way I'd heard it put by, I think it was Tim Keller, you know, when a good thing becomes an ultimate thing, that's when we're out of whack, you know, when when something we've elevated above just seeing it as a blessing from God, and now it's a gotta have it. And that can be, like you said, any area of our life that we are not consecrating, idols will spring up. Maybe career, yeah, could even be our family, you know, like what you want for your kids, but if it doesn't happen, you're devastated because you're putting them on a pedestal, like we have to view all things, you know, sex, food, right, all of these things as blessings from God, not as idols. Because like you said, it's not like the little gold things, you know, that you said not the little figurines. It still happens some places in the world, but we don't really do that here. But we have lots of idols.
SPEAKER_01I think it's like a the the goal, it's a holistic cleansing, like every part of our lives, you know, yeah. Uh again, like this idea of compartmentalization, even I think can, you know, to a fault be a temptation in our lives. But it's every like no stone should be left unturned. When we pray, we should pray, search my heart, oh God, like see if there be any wicked way in me, you know, like find like every area from head to toe, like leave no corner, you know, unaddressed, like all of it, you know, purity in every aspect in every area of our lives is our goal.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, in regards to the last two points tie together, you know, the coming of Christ and the consecration is, you know, the Bible says, tying back to our theme, apocalyptic, you know, Revelation says, you know, it's not gonna be like this peaceful, diplomatic, we're gonna talk this out. Like he is coming to consecrate. You know, it says here, you know, and we've alluded, Jesus says there'll be wars and rumors of wars and you know, false prophets that we see here. And so he's gonna have to come and address and deal with those things.
SPEAKER_01And it will be hard. And what's foretold is that two-thirds of the nation of Israel will be cut off and they will perish. I mean, that's gonna be hard. You know, that will be, but I think a part of the process of the humbling that will take place, like bringing in a sense this unfaithful nation to their knees, one one-third will remain, and of this one-third, this remnant, what's promised is that they will be refined, right? As through fire. And that's, you know, a picture of you know, metal, you know, being uh purified, removing the dross and the impurities from metal like gold and silver so that it's pure and valuable. Like that's the process essentially that's described as an illustration that God will do through hard times, through the fire, they will be refined. And then, when all is said and done, tested as in proven. Like that, they're legit, and they will be my people, I will be their God. You know, when Christ comes, you know, it's gonna be hard. He comes to judge and to make war, but he will fight, we're told, and in the end, although it will be hard, the nation of Israel will be saved. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And again, all this Old Testament, New Testament work together, you know, Paul says anything that's not done for the Lord, anything that's not found in Christ, will be burned up. Wood, hay, and stubble versus something that truly lasts. So that should be our desire of our life to live. And really, in a lot of ways, like it should be a good thing. You know, we should not take joy in sin, or, you know, I think anybody, this is just you look at the world, it's not the way it should be. Like I don't think anybody can honestly, after the the 20th century, say that it is, or with everything we see going on in the world now. But so we should look forward to that, to Christ returning, making everything right, being able to live in that kind of world.
No Hypocrites Plus Acts Preview
SPEAKER_01And consecration of everything. So let's kind of bring it to a close with the last statement, which is an interesting statement in the book of Zechariah. We're told that there shall no longer be a traitor. So this is verse 21 of chapter 14, in the house of the Lord of hosts on that day. It's an interesting, you know, what's that talking about? And so traitor, actually, the Hebrew word there in the original text is Canaanite, and Canaanites were known for trading. And so, really, what this is saying is like no one's gonna be and gather for worship under false pretenses. So I think about like our world and our culture today. I know I'm not informing anyone of anything, like the perception or the view that so many non-believers have is that churches are filled with hypocrites. Hypocrites. You know, that people and I think that there are a lot of people that claim to be Christians that are not following Jesus Christ. There's a contradiction, they're causing confusion. And that's not okay. God's not okay with that. And so what's being promised here is there's not there's not gonna be that. In the last day, there's not gonna be confusion. Like everyone will be true, sincere, authentic worshipers of the Lord in the house of the Lord. When the people of God come together, it will be sincere. Everyone will be glad to be there. No one's gonna be drugged to church by their mom or dad or their spouse, like and just, you know, doing, you know, they're out of obligation. That's what that verse is saying, I believe. I think that's a glorious thing. Like everyone will be worshiping in spirit and in truth. You know, today we often hear of this 80-20 rule, right? Where 20% of, you know, the flock do 80% of the work. Like, in other words, there's this 20% of I loved your committed or involved or committed, yeah. Involved or committed. In essence, you could say like 20 people are cut, 20% are committed and 80% are involved. But I think what this passage is saying, it's like going to be a hundred percent committed, and not even just committed, but devoted to the Lord, and people will be glad to gather. I will, I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord. No obligation, no checking boxes, ritual, just going through the motions. It will be a sincere, no hypocrites on that day. What a beautiful picture, right? You know, what a beautiful promise. No hypocrites, no, you know, no stains, but a pure, holy, consecrated people, all of them together worshiping the Lord on that day.
SPEAKER_00Amen. That's why heaven will be a great place, right? We'll be able to have that full relationship, the restored relationship with God, relationship with each other. You know, we won't have to trust this person, can I trust that person? Are they involved, committed? You know, like no, it will all be in that proper place and way. So certainly wonderful book, you know, challenging book, you know, a lot of a lot of kudos getting through all the 14 chapters. We crossed the finish line. I would say again to our listeners, we thank you guys for tuning in. If you have questions, like you said, the gentleman you talk to, please come talk to us. You know, we don't want you to, you know, walk away, you know, frustrated. You know, we're glad to have these conversations, ask questions. That's what we're here for. Because we want to dig in, we want to have these conversations, we don't just want to, you know, throw this out there and and not deal with the.
SPEAKER_01I will say, I don't even know how that came across when I shared that information about someone coming. I will say I appreciated the fact that he came. And he did not come in a mean-spirited way. He was struggling because he had a perception and interpreted some of the things I was saying. And so it actually was a joy to just kind of have a further conversation and explain. And then even after that, he was struggling and wanted to pray with someone. So he went into the prayer room with with Herb and prayed with him. And so I was thankful, like to be able to, instead of him just leaving, you know, and just never coming back and I'm never gonna talk to them again. Like he said, no man, I I really struggled with, you know, and and I have a question about what you said here and here. And I enjoyed that and appreciated his willingness to come. He came humbly.
SPEAKER_00So and we're humble too, you know. We don't have all the answers, we just seek God's will and all those things. Well, preview Acts for us. The it's not the acts of the excited. Most Bibles say the Acts of the Apostles, but in our theme this year, it's really the Acts of the Holy Spirit.
Questions And Closing
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and really we're not preaching through the entire book of Acts. That would take forever, which we have actually done that here before, but I think through the first eight or nine chapters. But yeah, so our theme verse is from Zechariah, right? 4 6 Not by might, not by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of hosts. And we see the Spirit at work in undeniable ways as the church is born and grows and is built like through these ordinary people, right? God is doing extraordinary things, the word of God is advancing, and so we really seek to highlight and see in the those first chapters of Acts the work of the Holy Spirit. And so I'm excited about that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, same Holy Spirit we have today. So we can continue to lean in, how we should be the church, right? We can learn from that. So looking forward to that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and our church, what we are, who we are, is an extension of what we see come into being in the book of Acts. And so, yeah, we're, yeah, who would have thought back then, 2,000 plus years ago, when the church was born? I mean, America was not even a thought, a blip on anyone's radar, and yet here we are, you know, worshiping the Lord in Townsend, Delaware. Yeah, it's incredible to think about.
SPEAKER_00So, Life House Family, we look forward to getting into the book of Acts with you. As always, questions, comments, reach out anytime. We so appreciate you taking the time to watch, and we'll see you next time. Yep.
